The Callaway X Forged Max Star Iron introduces a new concept within the category of easy-to-hit, long-flying irons. While many clubs in this segment use multi-material construction with cast stainless steel, Callaway has developed a unique "Dual Mild Carbon Steel Structure" for this model. This approach aims to deliver exceptional distance and forgiveness, particularly for a forged iron.

Innovative Dual Mild Carbon Steel Structure

The development of the X Forged Max Star Iron tackled the challenge of combining the soft feel of a mild carbon steel forging with significant distance and forgiveness. Callaway's solution is the Dual Mild Carbon Steel Structure, which involves forging the face and back face separately from S20C mild carbon steel and then welding them together to form a single head.

This innovative construction allows for a pocket cavity that is notably deeper and larger than what's typically seen in traditional forged irons. It creates a unique weighting structure with a slightly higher yet deep center of gravity (CG). This specific CG placement is designed to encourage impact slightly below the CG, which, combined with a thin, high-rebound face, generates a distinct gear effect not usually found in standard irons. This design is intended to increase backspin at impact, offering a utility-like ease of use and high launch, a first for Callaway in a soft-feeling mild carbon steel iron.

Playability and On-Course Feel

The large pocket structure of the X Forged Max Star Iron naturally results in a wider sole. This design helps the club glide through the turf easily, making it simpler to get the ball airborne. The familiar Tri-Level Sole Design, seen in previous X Forged and X Forged Star irons, is also incorporated here. This includes a comb-like chamfer on the leading edge and a consistent chamfer from toe to heel on the trailing edge. Even with the wide sole, this design helps to prevent excessive digging and promotes a smooth swing, contributing to better turf interaction.

Specifications and Distinctive Accents

The X Forged Max Star Iron set comprises seven clubs: I#4 through I#9, and a Pitching Wedge (PW). The lofts are set 1 degree weaker (more loft) than the X Forged Star iron, with the 7-iron having a loft of 30 degrees. For shaft options, there are two steel models and one carbon model available.

As a product designed for the Japanese market, the X Forged Max Star Iron features a distinctive "X" motif on the toe side of the back face. This design, inspired by traditional Kiriko (cut glass) patterns, is larger and more pronounced than the one found on the X Forged Max iron, adding a unique visual accent to the club's sharp overall aesthetic.
