Mizuno MP66 Irons Japan 8

Mizuno MP-66 Yoro Craft Irons – The new MP-66 was just released a few weeks back.  This Japan only design is Mizuno Japan’s new flagship players cavity back.

The MP-66 is the evolution of the MP-64 iron with the help of Mizuno’s Japan tour players who have requested multiple improvements not only in shape but also design and feel.  We have many photos after the jump and please remember these are full blown custom by yoro featuring a unique finish and grind that is not retail in Japan.  Click read more to continue…

The above picture shows the back face.  One of the key attributes of the MP-66 is that Mizuno has reduced the amount of head deformation to suppress unnecessary vibration which negatively impacts feel.  The new MP-66 is said to be their best feeling cavity back in Mizuno history.  Only the MP-55 is more forgiving in their line up and it’s an iron we highly suggest based on our client feedback.  Many new MP-66 orders have a #4 MP-55 requested.

The above photo shows a yoro craft grind so it is not the standard shape.  This iron originally has a more rounded toe so when I gave the team at yoro my special request for a sharper toe it still comes out looking slightly rounded which is very subtle yet sexy.

The toe grind will alter the shape of the toe when looking at the back side.  Various areas from the neck, toe and lower portion of the toe side have all been improved over the MP-64.  Toshinori Muto one of Mizuno’s pro staffers recently provided the feedback that the 66’s are surprisingly easy to hit for such a small head and especially in the long irons.

I requested a thinner and straight top line grind with reduced offset as you can see in the above photo it came out looking beautiful and very blade like.

I actually sent Mizuno a photo of one of my favorite face shapes to do their best to match and the results was perfect.

Standard shafts are NS950 and DGS200 but you can also order from TSG with a variety of other upgrade shafts,  finishes and grinds.  I purchased the alternate stamping design,  with the MP-66 there are only 2 options the original and one that lacks the MP-66 label on it so I went with the cleaner of the two.

Forged of Mild Steel (S25CM) precision forging / 1025E and standard with Mizuno’s  Nickel-chrome plated mirror finish.  The finish you see in this post is full satin.

When you purchase the optional stamping at an upcharge you can request removing grain flow forged on the neck and when you do so they have their yoro designation 2010C laser etched (not engraved) on the neck.

We ordered a very subtle version of the W-Grind,  it’s hard to see but what I notice is that it’s now a thinner more rounded sole with just a touch of trailing edge.  On the carpet this club sits perfectly.

Finally I have ordered it with the new Fujikura MCI black weight flow shafts.  Top notch in my opinion.  I am still a fan of the original MCI but these one has a tapered weight flow making the long irons easier to get up while moving into the short better accuracy and dispersion.  This iron set is now available,  please email [email protected] if you are interested.
