Srixon Z-TX Driver Review: GTI Exclusive!

Here’s a bit of a review done by yours truly after 2 range sessions and 27 holes at my home course.

Feel: 4/5 Points

Solid feeling club, Srixon usually always makes clubs that feel pretty good and this driver has that semi hollow sound but with still enough metallic impact so it doesnt feel as cheap as some of the others on the market.  The face and sweet spot feel thick in a good way.  Usually thinner face means hotter but this club is HOT & Feels meaty. It feels more stable and that the area behind the sweet spot has something great behind it. Compared to most USDM drivers its far above and beyond, compared to high end drivers from brands like Epon, TourStage, and others its competitive and in the mix.

Forgiveness: 4/5 Points

The other day I was hitting this along side the R9 Max 460 and this for sure feels more forgiving when mishit toward the heel or the toe. The mishits high or low were less forgiving than the R9 Max by a margin that is barely noticeable by myself or playing partners.  Overall I think they combined some of the forgiving features of XXIO’s drivers like its shape & twin cam sole  adapting it into the more playeresque design of the Z-TX.

Accuracy: 4/5 Points

It’s tough to say, we all hit our big dog differently on different days and IMO the shaft installed in my review club a Tour AD EV series in stiff was a little to stout for me and that will always create a lower more accurate ball flight for the player.  It’s a full sized 460cc head so by todays technology standards this club is about as for forgiving and accurate as any could be.  I think its very accurate, my tester was cut  just under 45″ in length, anything shorter would be more accurate while anything longer would have a wider dispersion.

Distance & Workability: 4.5/5 Points

Driver is long, very long!  I could have used a bit softer shaft but when i put good speed and technique on the Z-TX it flew like few others. I could go on to say that this is the longest driver I have hit ever….period! It’s not no 15 yards longer than my previous driver and it isnt even 10 yds longer but the combo of its peircing trajectory + carry along with the roll and forward kick it was working. The ball flight was a bit low for my taste and maybe with a softer shaft i could gain a few more yards of carry. I would also like to hit it at 45.5″ to see if I can squeeze a few more out as well.

As for workability, I wouldnt give it 4.5 that portion would be a 3.5 as I have been hitting smaller headed drivers in recent months and notice that any 420cc or smaller head is able to produce a much different experience when it comes to being workable. If all drivers were 460 then I would say this one is extremely workable but fact of the matter is that all drivers are not this size and that a smaller head is noticeably more workable.

Aesthetics:: 4/5 Points

Very modern and very different compared to the normal Srixon product. I like the yellow accents used and also how mean and down to business they made it appear. It reminds me of a shark for some reason.  The actual club I am hitting is Tour Issue from Japan, from all pictures that I have seen it looks the same as the retail version.  The face depth is fairly deep while the face length is longer than most.  From above the shape of the head isnt exactly pear but it isnt obtrusive or game improvement looking either.

So I think this is one of the best performing drivers on the market today. It’s got no gimmicks and no bold claims of new technology but what it does have is an evolved thickness structure behind the face, a new light weight titanium material allowing 3% more MOI and improved weight distribution on top of its XXIO adopted twin cam sole.  Also Top pro golfers like Tommy Nakajima and Jim Furyk played a big part in the design. I hear Furyk played a roll in designing the face groove lines so that the square club head could match the square groove line.  Shaft options standard are pretty good but aftermarket options are always better provided they fit you.  This driver is currently available in Japan via the TSG proshop, no date has been provided as to when it will be made available in the United States.
