Sony Nex-5 Voigtlander Nokton 40mm f1.4 Classic

I’ve been so happy with the Sony Nex-5 I got a few months ago. Being my first interchangeable lens camera I have learned so much about photography technique and the skills to go along with taking good pictures. It’s almost like golf, you can’t buy good pictures, in the end it’s up to the vision of the photographer and his/her composition and choice of lines, just like in golf where it doesn’t matter how expensive the gear is if you don’t have the right swing for it.

I originally picked up a Sigma 30mm f1.4 EX a month ago and it was my first go with manual focus. At least that lens communicated with the Nex (as it’s meant to be auto focus, just not on the Nex) as I’ve decided to go a step further and purchase a few fully manual focus lenses.  I got a new Voigtlander Nokton 40mm f1.4 Classic (picture on right on my Nex) and I’m thrilled with the way it takes pictures. In the last month, I’ve actually gone manual focus more often than using the auto focus kit lenses. I find the ability to control focus as well as the camera settings like aperture, shutter speed etc make for a great combination of creative and nice looking pictures. I though it would be tough to take pictures of golf clubs but on the contrary it’s been awesome! I’ve simply learned so much not only about manually adjusting a camera for good pictures but angles and lines and composition as well as colors.

Here are a few examples of pictures I took today for our store newsletter using the new Nex-5 and Voigtlander combo.

On another note, the Nex-5 has been selling so well in Japan. It has topped or been at the top of all camera sales since it’s release nearly 4 months ago. It’s created a large following, from photography enthusiasts, to pros wanting something smaller to opening new doors for those used to point and shoot cameras wanting to step up. It’s ability to take pretty much any lens via adapter and its small size has spawned combinations of every variety for many hardcore camera enthusiasts. I personally love the way third party lenses look on the Sony Nex-5 so I’ve been collecting images of people’s setups from around the web. Here are pics with the Nex-5 and Leica, Voigtlander, Zeiss, Canon, Minolta, Olympus, Nikon and many other lenses. Pics and copyright belong to each owner.

I just bought the NEX 5 with 18-55 kit lens yesterday. Can’t wait to use it. Now eyeing the Nokton 40mm f1.4, even though a manual focus. Also to buy a Canon adaptor to go with my Canon lens 70-200 f4. Please include a few more shots of people, portraits, landscape, etc. Thank you.
