Round 2 Continues On At HP Byron Nelson Championship

SabbatiniLooks like Adam Scott has some serious finger crossing in store for him if he’s got any realistic plans to defend his Byron Nelson title.  Considering the fact that the projected cut line is sitting around E and he’s currently on the 17th hole at 3-over-par, it doesn’t look good for the Aussie to be sitting anywhere near the top of the leaderboard.  It doesn’t look like he’ll even make the cut once again, as he’s yet to make the cut in almost 2 full months at any tournament.  Not a great start to 2009.

Sabbatini & Driscoll Tied for Lead

Also stacked up against Scott, despite his 3 over par, is the fact that there is some absolutely great golf being played as we speak.  Currently in the lead we have a tie between Rory Sabbatini and James Driscoll at 8-under-par.  Sabbatini is already in the clubhouse and has signed his scorecard but Driscoll is only on hole 13 so we could clearly be seeing some changes atop the leaderboard before the close of play in Round 2.  Also adding fuel to fire in the hunt for the number one spot is the fact that there are two more golfers hovering at -7 and two more at -6.

Byron Nelson Always Produces Tight Finishes

Bottom line, Rounds 3 and 4 are going to get extremely interesting and could prove to provide the HP Byron Nelson Championship with yet another nail-biting, close finish.  In fact, the Byron Nelson has become synonymous with close finishes, check out this little tidbit:

“…it’s folly this early in the second round to predict who’ll be raising the championship trophy on Sunday. But the one thing you can expect? A close finish.  In the 26 years since the tournament moved from Preston Trail in Dallas to the Las Colinas area, the HP Byron Nelson has produced 11 playoffs. In fact, there have been two three-year stretches in which the winner was decided by a playoff each time…On another eight occasions, the winner won by a single stroke.”

Wow.  Buckle your seatbelts because thingsn are going to get extremely interesting over the next 48 hours of golf.  Anyone want to succumb to the “folly” and try to predict a winner?
