I’m continuing to enjoy the Crazy Longest Yard and Legacy Aero combo. It is a joy to hit with predictable impact. Simply swing away and the ball goes long and dead straight. I can’t ask for anything more right now… or can I?  While my curiosity about Crazy has been somewhat satisfied, it has left me craving for more.  So I’ve decided to move forward and continuing adding Crazy shafts to my bag starting with my fairway woods and utility.

I’ve got a PRGR EGG Spoon 17* in my bag now as well as a PRGR M3 Hit tour 7W which is 21*. My utility is an Epon AF-901 25* bent to 24*. I have been tossing and turning over whether I should pull apart my Spoon, the favorite club in my bag. It currently has a Bassara F53 shaft in it and plays amazingly.  So I have decided to leave it alone.

PRGR M3 Hit Tour + Crazy Black FW80

The PRGR M3 Hit Tour 7W has a stock m-40 shaft in it at 41.5″ and D2 swing weight. This will be replaced with a Crazy Black FW80 shaft. The FW80 is full length 80t carbon and highly recommended for those who have trouble striking the sweet spot of their woods. It claims to reduce coming over the top and create predictable and optimal impact as all Crazy shafts claim to do.  Crazy’s FW80 is cheaper than the driver shaft because they produce it at a shorter length and already tipped for a 3 wood. This reduces the material needed to produce the shaft lowering the cost for consumers. I choose an FW80 Regular flex and will tip it 1″ for the 7W to play at 41″.

Epon AF-901 + Crazy Black FW80

Next up is the Epon AF-901 24* which is shafted with a NGS Mach Line UT Regular shaft at 39″. I find I pull this club so I wanted something stiffer. Crazy’s Black UT shaft was an option but it’s too heavy for my setup as my XXIO iron shafts are currently 60g and I want to stay in line with the weight progression. I considered the Longest Yard Iron shafts but there is also nothing in the 60g range as the Regular is in the 70g range and the R2 is low 50g range (which could actually work).  I decided to experiment and get a second FW80 shaft for the UT. It’s not uncommon now these days to see FW shafts end up in utilities and hybrids. I believe the FW80 can give me the control and feel I want. I will tip this shaft 1.5″ and install it to 39″ like the original.

So I will complete the builds tomorrow and report back on before and after specs and performance. Should be a fun experiment if not a costly one which sometimes finding the right shaft can be.  I use both these clubs to attack the green from sub 200y range, about 170-180 for the AF-901 and 190-200 for the 7W.  I am hoping that the high grade carbon gives me the control I need with distance as a bonus.  Stay tuned for Part 5!
