Ai Miyzato just one the Safeway Classic on the LPGA for her fifth win of the year. After dominating the Japanese tour and then moving over to the US and going through many growing pains, Ai-chan has finally used that beautiful smooth swing to her advantage. She is not known to be long off the tee, but rather for her accuracy and smooth tempo and control. Here are a couple of drills she does from Youtube:

Ai-chan uses balance balls under her feet while she warms up. This technique helps take the tension out of her game and helps her relax. It also helps with core strength.

In this next video, she does a slow motion warmup of her swing… NO THE VIDEO IS NOT SLOW MOTION…its just Ai-chan.

I have and still do balance drills using similar type of balance disks. It helps one’s ball striking quite a bit and really helps to quiet your swing. Awesome drills.

slow motion helps to figure out what is it exactly that you are doing during your swing. here is a quote from Ben Hogan when asked about it: “At this pace I can control the golf club and everything in my swing. Whenever I’m working on something I always do it in slow motion. That way I can monitor what I’m doing.” there are a couple of videos on youtube where Hogan does this and its quite impressive. balance things seems more to do with relaxation than the actual swing practice because from swing mechanics perspective they dont make sense at all.

Both drills are ones I definitely want to try, I hope the balance pods can help relax and quiet my swing as I have too much upper body movement and tend to overswing.

the balance thing like commenters noted is a relaxation kinda thing. i know what they mean because i have this problem myself. i tend to stiffen up and you cant swing effectively when that happens you can only hit not swing and thats very bad. i also tend to do it when i get tired. with that balance drill if you stiffen up you gonna fall so it helps you loosen up i guess. i used to do one leg drill, sans the wobbly thing, but not anymore, the reason being i reckon it promotes too much arms and hands action because you cant pivot and weight shift doing that and therefore cant groove effective swing motion without a solid connection to the ground with both feet. for your upper body problems you might wanna try to practice a bit with wider stance, thats gonna restrict and quiet your upper body somewhat. you gonna loose distance but since this is just for practice it doesnt really matter.@gocchin:

With that kind of slow swing just wondering how she can get the ball long. Ernie has an easy swing too but he gets a good distance
