PRGR EGG 1 Driver

Is this weird to you?

Don’t worry PRGR is known for pushing the envelope, for those not so familiar with PRGR aka (Pro Gear) it’s a JDM brand owned by the giant Yokohama Rubber co.  PRGR was started back in 2001 (same as TSG) their first club was the TR speed titan followed by the PRGR Duo drivers. Just fantastic clubs back in the day ahead of the times with technology and style.

Very popular on TSG was the Egg series it’s been popular for years and still is today, The product that broke through to TSG members was the original Egg fairway wood. Not traditional by any means but it gets the job done and focuses on performance.  Years later the Egg series is still going strong and in this blog post I’d like to introduce everyone to the newest member of the egg family the Egg 1 Driver.

Designed for the Athlete Golfer.. What’s that mean? It’s a term used often in Japan meaning the faster swinger and stronger players,  Strong Loft (7.5) + Deep face + low center of gravity +low torque shaft + 46″ length = The Optimal Combo for Athlete Golfers.  What does this mean for you? high bal flight with low spin for increased distance in a nutshell. If you’re an athlete player that just cringed because I said high ball flight don’t forget that the loft is 7.5*.

It’s only available in the 7.5* loft D2.5 46″ and in stiff flex the standard shaft is 63g 2.7tq. The Egg 1 is a 460cc head 61* lie angle dead square face angle. Face: Forged, Body: Vacuum Precision casting, Weight: Forged Zilconium.

So how’s it look, feel, sound, and perform? Surprisingly fantastic and don’t let the 7.5 loft scare you, to me it plays like the perfect 9.5 trajectory. The egg 1 driver doesn’t look as big as most 460’s drivers either, it’s got a good shape when looking down on it and also a pretty cool graphic where the face meets the crown, usually I am anti graphics on the tops of a driver but the eggs is subtle and modern looking imo.

PRGR has somehow managed to get the optimal spin rates for many types of players, on course several of us with all different types of swings kept the spin rates in between 2100 – 3000 but even the 3000 had a very stable baby straight to baby draw. We were using the not exactly precise bridgestone science eye for this because we needed an easy portable solution to use on the course.

Forgiveness is great and not so good at the same time, allow me to explain, the actual face area visually or mentally seems small but we had our fair share of bad shots and both the heel, toe, high and low forgave extremely well. Other than that mental/visual note I can’t complain this club may have a small face but all 460cc’s are focused on keeping the ball dispersion tight and stable.

I have only ever used Callaway Drivers since the BB Warbird came out, most recently the X Hot Tour. Never found any other manufacturer that better suits my swing, until I hit the Egg 1. This this is amazing! I’ve always had issues with too much spin and overly high trajectory, but the Egg 1 fixed that in an instant. It is so easy to hit, you’d never guess it’s only 7.5 deg, very easy to get the ball up in the air with a penetrating ball flight.
I’d say I’m getting around 15 yards more from the Egg 1 compared to my X Hot, and definitely hitting more fairways.
Highly recommend giving it a hit if you can find it.
