2011 ONOFF Forged Iron Review

I’ve had a lot of time with the 2011 ONOFF Forged Irons and really feel they are one of the most underrated irons on the market.   It’s all about Forgiveness and Feel.  It’s produced by Endo and forged of S20C,  it actually feels softer than the majority of Endo irons.   Think Epon AF-302 yet a little softer, yes it’s that good and  I actually prefer it over the 302.  Right now the new TourStage 905CB and these ONOFF Forged irons will be battling it out for a spot in my bag.  It’s already obvious that these are better for my game because they are more forgiving. Oh what to do…

Distance: The lofts are on the stronger side the PW comes in at 45.  It has a higher trajectory due to tungsten weighting in the sole which provides lot’s of carry. I tested them with the NS950’s which also fly on the higher side for even more distance.  What was interesting is that neither Tatz ( Tatsuro ) or myself had any issues with ballooning and he swings very fast and plays X100’s.  I’m considering these irons with high kick low trajectory heavy graphite.

Forgiveness: Shockingly good, I was able to compare this to the Epon AF-702 and the Fourteen 550.  The ONOFF Forged Irons ranked up there with them in ease of use.  Not as stupid forgiving like the AF-702 but pretty close to the Fourteen’s.  I noticed lower toe misses were still soft and didn’t lose much distance.  The 3-7 irons all have that tungsten insert,  Just as forgiving as much bigger irons yet in a smaller and sexier design. The amount of tungsten weight in the insert is impressive #3-5 is 27 grams and the #7 iron is at 22 grams.  That’s a lot of weight and it’s spread over the entire length of the sole.

Feel: Very soft but not mushy at all.  It’s one of the best feeling irons I have hit in years if not ever.  It sit’s atop my list of the most rewarding feel at impact.  It’s like a cross of the overly soft Mizuno feel and the firm impact of Endo produced irons.  Not much more to say than if you have the chance to hit them let us know what you think.  I know myself and Tatz were absolutely in love with how great they felt.  Of course we can partially give credit to the NS950 but I hit so many irons with that shaft I know when the heads a standout in feel.

Trajectory/Dispersion: Straight and easy to handle, the trajectory was not overly high as well with it being their pro model iron.  Shingo is playing a modified more edgy version of this very club.  Anything going too high could be easily adjusted with the proper shaft,  The dispersion is definitely 10 out of 10 and I think just about anywhere on the club face has a good chance of going straight.  The club was fairly workable and how I usually test that is is by hitting hooks and slices with long irons intentionally.

Design: Overall I love this design, it’s shape, it’s forgiveness and feel. I like how they jammed so much perimeter sole weighting yet kept it what I would call a medium sized players cavity. It’s similar to the Ryoma concept and how they place 60 grams in the back of their driver.  This isn’t as extreme but 27-22 grams is a lot of weighting.  I’m seriously considering bagging this iron and the only thing in it’s way is the new 905 Limited CB by TourStage.  I’m gonna give the 905’s at least 2-3 rounds before making my decision and update my WITB.
