Ok so I gather most people are playine one of these 3 shafts in their irons, so I thought I'd start a thread comparing the 3. Now I've never played the Nippon's and I heard they are really for lighter swingers. I have played the PX and the DG however and here's my take.

DG s300 is about equivalent to the PX 6.0 in stiffness but the 2 shafts really have 2 different trajectories. I notice with the PX the ball goes up a lot faster and kind of flattens out. With the DG it has a lower trajectory almost seems more penetrating. PX goes a lot higher but yet it doesn't balloon at all. I guess it depends what you're looking for. I only have the PX in my 2 iron so I couldn't tell you what the spin is on mid to low irons. I can tell you when I get to my ball in the fairway, the ball is always 6 inches behind the divot it left in the fairway. So I guess it checks pretty good.

As a life DGS400 player I had tried Rifle stuff but never found one I liked. I now have the PX's and love them. Just a you described they go up and flaten out. I really like the feel which is smooth and easy to load. I know I'm a half club longer. I've got taper tip 5.5's that CPM @6.2-3. Just right for me. I tried 6.5 and they scoped out at 7.2-3 to much for me. The short irons were fine, but the long irons were tuff.

nippon makes nice shafts and yes they seem to play a little softer than the other two mentioned with like flex's. i went from dg s-300 to the px 5.5's. a little afraid the 5.5's would be soft but it worked out perfect and the 6.5's would have been too much. at the time they did'nt have the 6.0's and took a gamble. the 5.5's still play stiffer than the dg s-300's but does'nt hurt me. i gained a few yrds-mostly due to more air time but a flatter flight which also helped me in stopping the ball on the green. i would'nt give up on them- find a buyer and get the 5.5's.

I currently use Titleist 690CB with DGS-300. My swing speed with 5 iron is about 90 mph and find the DGS-300 slightly stiff for my swing. Ideal would be midpoint between R300 and S300. So, what would that be in PX? 5.0 or 5.5?

Further, I an stepping up to a player's muscle back irons by ordering Miura Giken MB5002 heads. I can get slightly lighter DGS-200 shafts more suited for my swing or pay 3 times more and get PX. I understand that MB5002 has flatter trajectory than MB5001. Sort of like Titlest 670 vs 690MB or Mizuno MP37 vs MP33. I don't want to make my golf life too difficult so I am thninking PX would be a better match with these heads.

Any suggestions?

I wouldn't go with a PX unless you are a hitter. Sounds like you are more of a Swinger. The PX's run very stiff so I'm not sure even the 5.0's would suit you. I'd go with regular Rifles. They are great shafts and will help with distance and trajectory too.

Yes, I am a sweeper and not a hitter. Thanks. I ordered Rifle FM Precision 5.5s for the MB5002s. I'm a club HO and got ideas for new equipment from this site. I also got myself MR-23 US Spec CBs with DG S200s. Will be comparing these soon. Also ordered Scratch wedges. I feel like a kid in a candy store.

:tsg_smiley_yes: This thread is going to go on for months. Whilst we all have our favourite heads, getting the right shaft is absolutely critical in getting your irons to perform to their maximum.

My 2 cents worth on the subject is as follows.

I changed the DGS400 in my Mizuno to Rifles 5.5 three or four years ago. The result was longer and higher shots. I really like the Rifles, however other members of the site use the Nippons.

I have bought a Nippon shaft just as a trail. I found the shaft to be very lively. I am now considering the Nippons, however I am also considering the Gauge MB2 heads.

As the Nippons play soft to flex I am considering soft stepped Xs. Now for the pedantic bit. Once you know your swing speed with the irons, you can match your shafts to the correct cpms for your swing speed. Is this a lot of effort? Yes. Would a ho go to these lengths? Absolutely.

Gotta say I'm keen to give the Nippons a go!! A ho's work is never done.

Given all the trouble I had with Rifle Flighted (from Rifle in the U.S.) & their frequencies, I’d be hard pressed to even consider using any shaft from Rifle again – including Project X. It would have to be from Rifle Japan and have to be a REALLY great shaft.

I had the TTDG in my J33’s and 690.CBs. I liked them, but found them totally unremarkable. (No gripes, no raves.) I found the perfect match for me in the Harrison Professionals – they as heavy as the TTDG, nice kick and made very pure/round - as an aside, I had my Harrison’s SST Pured and they were all very close to being on the money before puring.

Having said all this, I couldn’t be happier with NSPRO 950s I currently have in my fairway woods. I’ve always liked steel in fairways, so I’m used to the feel. I’m telling you these are the straightest fairways I’ve owned to date, and I don’t think that’s all thanks to the V Steel 2 head.

So, I’m thinking it may soon be time to try the NS Pro 1150s in my irons… dirty, dirty, HO.

I like the sound of them thar' 1150s too........ I see 2006 being a year of experimentation(hard on the pocket)

Can i just say guys i have recently put in the 1150s into my mb2 heads and boy what a combo! i needed to add some weight to the heads to get the desired d2 swing weight, which was no bother as it doesnt effect play.

The feel from the nippons is unreal, far superior to any dg or rifle in my opinion. They do not FEEL as together as the project x rifles howver they perform every bit as stable. i previously had the 850s and the 750s, which also had great feel but they were just tooo dam light! they didnt provide ant real feedback, whereas the 1150s do! honestly if you are in the process of reshaftin your irons do not look past these!!!! :tsg_smilie_cool:

Nippon 1150s seem to play true to flex. They are not for light swingers. Other models may be but the 1150 is a shaft for guys who want a "normal" shaft. That is, if normal is still a nice mid weight (115g or so), with good feel that gets the ball up in the air and flattens out. It has a stiffer tip than other Nippons while still retaining Nippon feel. I'd softstep a stiff to put it in my SW and LW - in fact, Ari just delivered a Milled LW with 1150 softstepped.

Good point SwingMan. I too like a slightly modified flex in my wedges.
