First off, Tario has been BRILLIANT and has never ceased to stop to help. He has assisited in selection of wedges, wedge shafts, Crazy driver and now two Crazy driver shafts. It is the Crazy driver and shaft I will share my experience, though the story will not end here.
Earlier this year I purchased an R11 and had my clubmakers in UK build it with a Fubuki Alpha 70X5ct X Flex cut to 44 inches. When I received it I spent a long time tring it out and eventually ended up with the head on the following settings:
9 Degrees loft
Neutral Club Face
6g weight in heel
1g weight in toe
The distances ranged from 260 yards to I kid you not 340 yards. Generally there was never much roll (I use PV1x). The driver never became consistent either and so I took some video footage of the swing and saw that on the down swing at 9 o clock position, the shaft was bent like a (huge) banana with the arc facing up rather than down! I compared it to driver videos of players on tour and their shafts pretty much stay straight.
After reading about the Crazy driver and shaft and after much discussion with Tario, we decided on the 435II 9.5 deg head with 80 LS shaft 7.7 flex, 45.25 inches long. When it arrived - wow what a tool! Anyhow, I spent a while using it and for sure the shaft was awesome, ball flight quite low and penetrating and LOADS of roll and consistently straight but felt it was hard work. I remember being on the range and one of the european tour guys was bashing his R11 into the back bunker and so was I!!! His face was a picture. Weights in the head were all 1g's. Anyway, I liked the feel of the club at address etc, but wanted a lighter feeling club, to feel the head more in the swing and I could not really feel the shaft kick.
So, back to poor old Tario (thanks for your patience) and a discussion about the Royal Dec. I decided on giving this a go and three days ago a stiff arrived. So I am going to swap the 80ls out and put the RoyDec in and then also put the 80LS in the R11 as Tario felt with putting the sleeve on it would soften the shaft a bit and this wil also be a good test as Tario was not aware of a crazy going into an R11 yet. (Only thing is I cant get hold of the interchangeable sleeve att he moment!!).
So, when the drivers come back I will have some fun doing back to back tests and hopefully have two mega drivers! Story TBC....
After a long wait I got to try the Crazy head with the new Royal dec shaft (spec 46.5 inches long and swing weight D2). As you can imagine, the excitement and anticipation was electrifying. The club looked and felt great. In the hands the shaft felt a bit whippy to what I am used to and also VERY LONG!!
I hit about 40 balls with the royal dec and compared it back to back with my current driver TM burner tp with mitsu javln X stiff, 73 g cut to 44 inches. It did not go well. For sure the royal dec is longer but it went left right and straight and no way near as consistent as my old driver. Even got one of the club pros to watch and he was amazed at the difference. So given the old club is still being hit well, I guess my choice in royal dec shaft is wrong - which I am gutted about as I love the crazy head and the shafts - just need to find the right one, but its getting expensive. Tario has been excellent in his advice to me, I have just gone in the wrong direction. So my quest continues to get the right Crazy Shaft or do keep trying to make this baby work for me? I don't really want to change my swing given I am good with the old one - just want a lighter shaft and more distance as I am getting old!
The original Crazy LS 80 is being put into my R11 head and I am going to see how this works.
Views/suggestions would be appreciated as I need a bit of cheering up!
