Hello,

I have an opportunity to move to Hong Kong at the end of the year. One of the big considerations for me is golf so I just wanted to see what the golf situation in Hong Kong was like.

How easy/difficult is it to get on the public courses?
How are the practice facilities?

I searched online and it looks like there is only one public facility in Hong Kong and a few driving range options.

Any information is appreciated.

Thank ahead of time.

There are 3 to 4 private clubs in Hong Kong and one public one with 54 holes (I am not 100% sure). Of the private clubs, only The Hong Kong Golf Club would entertain walk in Monday to Friday (non holidays) on one of 3 18s but it is expensive at $180 green fee. Unless your company would already own a debenture membership in one of the private clubs, joining one is really not an option. The waiting period for HKGS is now at 18-20 years.

The only truly public course in the area is Kau Sai Chau, ran by The Jockey Club with again 3 18 holes built on an island. I believe the green fee is at a reasonable $100 or less but very popular and hence more difficult to book.

Of course there are many many courses in China just over the border which is an hour away from Central business district. One would be able to play there (as a non member) during the weekdays for about $100 all in, including transportation. The only issue here is you need an entry visa for China if you hold a foreign passport.

There are a few outdoor mult-storeys driving range in town but all hitting off mats to about 150 yards. I believe there is one range out in the country with real grass. The ranges are popular but I never had any problem getting on one unless height is an issue. Typically the range charges $6 to 7 for 30 minutes unlimited balls.

The public facility is one of the best in the world. However, it's difficult to get on during weekends. If you're moving for your job and depending on your position, perhaps you can make it a condition for you moving?

Other private courses do allow non-members but times are limited and fees are high. Practice facilities are decent but somewhat of a pain to get to.

Best option is indeed to play over the border in China. Commute depending on the course is anywhere from 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 hours. I actually go once a week with the same foursome and we just make it a day outing - cards and golf.

Golf in HK is not the easiest sport to practice but it's accessible to everyone.
