The great Moe Norman once said the best way to learn golf is to start from the hole and work bakwards. 70% of shots are inside 100 yards.
Jack was great with the "knife" and Tiger can "sting" a 2 iron, however these clubs are not practical for the average golfer, or some tour pros for that mater. With Moe's philoshy in mind here goes with my ideal scoring set for a "normal golfer". Driver - personal choice 10 degree loft Mizuno UX-2 17 degree 4,5 iron Mizuno MP60 6-8 iron Mizuno MP 32 9, PW Mizuno MP33 52,56 & 60 Bettinardi BB wedges Chipper Mizuno UX-2 20 degree, 34 inch putter shaft Putter - personal choice (I like Bettinardis) There is a consistent 4 degree difference between each iron. The PW is 48 and the 4 iron is 24. The chipper idea comes from Jedi on a seperate post, but I believe it is a good idea. If a bag was made up in this way, it would certainly provide numerous options around the green, where most of the scoring is done. The gaps are the UX-2 17 is probaly 10 to 15 yards shorter than a 3 wood. There is probably a 20 yard gap between the UX-2 17 and the 4 iron. However if you are not a touring pro playing in the US Open, it is unlikely you would get caught out on the yardage gaps around the 200 yard mark. As they say you don't "draw pictures" you simply record you score. |

I think you are on the right track, however, I prefer my set which has 5* gaps in the irons and wedges, which eliminates the gap wedge and an iron, and allows me to carry 3 fairways and either a 3 iron or a 64* wedge, depending on the course and how I'm playing.
